Vladimir Putin: The Rise of Gog and the Prophecy of Ezekiel 38-39

Putin

We may be seeing a biblical prophecy fulfilled in front of our eyes.  Ezekiel 38-39 foretells the coming invasion of Israel from a northern land known as Magog.  The ruler of Magog is said to be Gog, a name that most biblical scholars identify as a title rather than a proper name itself.

The prophecy of Ezekiel 38-39 is fascinating because it is so specific in the way it names a coalition of nations that will come up against Israel.  The prophecy foretells this axis of evil that invades Israel will be miraculously destroyed by the hand of God and that Gog, himself, will be killed.   What is remarkable about Gog’s defeat is that the Bible declares he will be buried in Israel and not in his homeland.  This will be a sure sign as to the literal fulfillment of this prophecy.

It is no secret that Israel has her share of enemies.  The focus tends to always be on the Palestinian conflict and tensions with Israel’s immediate neighbors.  But the Ezekiel 38-39 prophecy points directly to an invasion led by Russia.  What clues in the prophecy point to modern day Russia as the biblical land of Magog?

  • Magog is referred to as the land in the north.  If you draw a line from Jerusalem all the way to the North Pole, that line will pass through…Moscow.
  • Gog is referred to as the prince of Meshech and Tubal.
  • Meschech refers to the ancient peoples who live along the Black and Caspien Seas, the Moschi, or the Moschovites.  This is the word from which Moscow is derived.
  • Tubal is a derivative of the modern word Tobolsk.  Tobolsk is the former capital of Russia and one of its most famous cities.

It is chillingly clear that the ancient land of Magog is modern day Russia.  More startling are Russia’s allies as named by Scripture.  A quick survey of Ezekiel 38:5-6 and the reader will note:

  • Persia – modern day Iran.  It is no secret the role Russia has and is playing in Iran’s nuclear program.  Iran is located to the east of Israel.
  • Cush – modern day Ethiopia.  A north African nation located to the south of Israel.
  • Put – modern day Lybia.  Another north African nation and one that has become completely hostile to the West in recent days.
  • Gomer – while a modern day equivalent here is difficult, biblical scholars agree that the people of Gomer were the Cimmerians, who lived around the Black Sea and were expelled to what is modern day Turkey.  So Gomer could be Turkey.  However, the ancient Cimmerians lived in what is now known as…Ukraine.  We should take particular notice of this as Ukraine has sprung onto the world scene as Russia is on the doorstep of invasion of this sovereign nation.  Could Gomer be Ukraine?
  • Beth-togarmah – this too is not certain but some scholars have suggested Germany as the modern day equivalent of this ancient land.
  • The uttermost parts of the north – when one looks at a map of the nations north of Israel they will certainly see Syria, among others.  Once again, the role of Russia in Syria is unavoidable.

The point is clear.  Russia, the ancient land of Magog, is on the move.  The headlines declare it so.  The pieces of its coalition are quickly falling into place.  And it is this collection of nations, led by the great bear of the north, that will at some point make a move against Israel.

Is Vladimir Putin the biblical leader, Gog?  Only time will tell.  But consider…

  • Putin is emboldened.  Since the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War, Russia has been kept in-check by the United States.  Putin no longer feels “in check.” In fact, he is playing his own game of chess and doing his best to put the United States in “check.”
  • Just two weeks ago, Russia signed an arms agreement with Egypt, Israel’s southern most neighbor.  Egypt now gets it military arms from Russia and not the United States.
  • The world watched as President Obama, walked back from his red-line in Syria over the use of chemical weapons.  Putin was paying close attention as well.
  • The world watched as our ambassador and his team was slaughtered in Libya.  To this day our government has done nothing by way of response.  This too has been noted by Putin.
  • The world has watched as the United States has been fixated on domestic issues such as the economy, same-sex marriage, immigration, climate change regulations, the minimum wage, etc. and in turn has treated international matters as less important.
  • The world has watched as the United States has proposed defense cuts and troop reductions to pre-WWII levels.

So while the United States is gearing down, self-focused, and too timid to respond to international matters, Putin has decided to make his move.

Watch Russia.  Watch Putin.  Watch the response of the United States, or lack thereof.  And watch as biblical prophecy unfolds in tomorrow’s headlines.

I believe the Bible also says in Isaiah 17 that Damascus will become a pile of rubble. I heard that Israel has been destroying shipments of weapons that Russia has been trying to send to Syria.

    • Moester says :

Lisa as a VERY SERIOUS Gentile Zionist, Russia is insane if they think The United States Citizens (that matter) will ever allow any harm to come to Israel. We will fight to our last bullet, our last nuclear weapon, our last cosmic capability, our last drop of blood. If President Putin is suicidal he will try to harm Israel or help those that wish to harm Israel. President Teddy Roosevelt tried to warn The American People about negotiating with Russians over a century ago Lisa. “It’s almost impossible to negotiate with The Russians, they’re stupid and they constantly lie”. I’m not just talking brave about this either Lisa. I’m willing to go to Israel and die fighting to protect Her safety…………Long Live Israel ! !

      • cody says :

Moester, the American Citizens will want to fight for Israel, but our POTUS has made it clear that Israel means nothing to him, and will not aid them

      • Dale Melder says :

Moester, if you read the scripture that is referenced in the text of the article, it becomes clear that the US will not be the power that saves Israel from destruction, but God ,alone. If I remember the words correctly when it seems that all is lost for Israel then God will strike the invading forces killing 5 of 6 leaving the sixth part to return to their native land to tell the people what the God of Israel had done to deliver his people.

      • OlgaP says :

This is so unfortunate that you are so hateful and can so freely speak badly about people you don’t know and never met -to refer to the whole nation as evil, stupid liers. I guess it may come as surprise to you, that there is plenty of these here in the US as well

      • Ty says :

The issues with this is Russia has agreements with more allies than what this scripture calls for. While the Iran and Ukraine are accurate it didn’t mention the rest of the Shanghai 5 which would include the following countries. China, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan.

The Shanghai 5 have an agreement of if they go to war that they all go to war.

Also they would crush any opposition, including USA. Just saying.

      • Christopher Altsman says :

Moester….. Maybe you my friend have it all wrong. Maybe Christianity in the known USA is not christianity at all anymore. Maybe the rise of the mega church is along the same lines of the talk My man Jesus had against the Jews back in the old day. You my friend speak of incompetence and a religion that you have no clue about. Sorry guy, but true religion has absolutely no politics invoked, and well, your idiotic post above has nothing but babble about politics in religion. Sorry, but they are two different things. Please go back and read your bible.

      • Patsy says :

Did you not read where it said this Gog character will be killed by the hand of God and buried in Israel. We have nothing to worry or fight about , God will handle this.

      • Phariss says :

But suppose the rapture has already taken place when this event takes place

      • dperryr says :

I wouldn’t be so sure that the US will defend Israel, because scholars agree the US is nowhere to be mentioned in prophecy. If we continue to mock God and His law by electing people like President Obama I believe we might very well be insignificant when it comes to the last day prophecies..

      • Jim Dudley says :

Russia and Putin are anything but Stupid. President Obama has all but turned the US over to the Muslims. Obama is anything but a friend of Israel. Obama is the President of the US because GOD has allowed him to be there. No matter what happens, Israel will never be defeated. I do believe that a lot of good citizens of the US do not even realize what they have for a Prisident. Whatever happens, GODS WORD will be fulfilled and that is Sure. If you have not given your life to the LORD then it will not matter what side you are on. GOD is going to save Israel and no one else.

      • Tony Baker says :

Moester, perhaps you and possibly some friends of yours are willing to go to Israel… fight and die. In years past, our nation would have backed that up militarily. But in case you have not been paying attention, let me be the first to inform you that the government of the USA will not do anything in support of Israel today! If your not paying attention, Barack Obama will do all that he can to assist in the demise of Israel. You mention liars, Barack Obama leads the list on that trait. If you want to fall back on treaties, the Ukraine sign papers with the USA that if they gave up all there defensive weapons, the USA would protect them. So…. where were we? Who have we helped in the Middle East in the past 6 years? We were a part of turning Libya to rubble, have we done anything to put it back right? Have we found the Benghazi murderers? Are you aware that the US government and John McCain are the ones that have supplied the weapons that have murdered 150,000 Syrians? Do you really think Barack Obama will ever fire one shot at Iran? For you and all the ones that refuse to see it, let me be the first to inform you that the United States government is on the side of evil, Satan and the antichrist in this battle!

      • Rod says :

Lisa, you said “The Russians are stupid.” Really? Since when? Currently, the United states has the most stupid President we have ever elected, and voted in by stupid people, President Obama even looks stupid compared to Putin. The Russians on the other hand, know who Putin is. They KNOW Putin is clever and not stupid. Yes, Russia did overspend for the Winter Olympics. But it was Putin’s ” show.” Putin waited until the olympics were over to start taking over Crimea. And the stock markets here in the U.S trembled and fell. And that was all our nation really cared about the whole incident! For America and the Obama Administration, if it doesn’t have ant effect on the almighty dollar, then it’s of no concern to the Obama Administration or any other politician at this time. It’s as if the American government has become like Reese Withespoon; a ” Legally Blond” stupid, rich, airhead politicians!

      • Malman says :

Don’t be fooled to think for a minute that the US with Obama as President will ever stand up for Israel! For Israel’s Future Security….You should hope that Obama’s final 2 years go by quickly!

      • linda says :

        Obama doesn’t care about Israel!

      • G says :

Long live Israel but if you think for one minute Obama will support Israel, It will not happen under his watch. He himself is Muslim and he himself committed treason sending fighter jets to the Muslim Brotherhood.

      • Ollie says :

Israel stands alone, so that God can show His might! So it is written, so shall it be done! America will turn her back on Israel, not the people but our rulers!

Moester, undeniably you are a real Jew but how many real Jews are there in Israel nowadays and what are you doing about how your leadership (Zionists) is leading you down this path of destruction. You have been blinded or are wearing blinders thinking Putin is taking this action or will take this action without provocation. Your Zionist leaders along with the Nazi/Khazar leaders in the States wish this war. They are pushing and probing everywhere and every step of the way in order to get WW3. You are biting the bait as they say but it might be best if you took a step back and look at what is really happening in the world and who is responsible and who is trying to help. Then you can rant and rave about your Zionist being Cabal.

  2. John says :

I normally don’t post on these, but I fear that you are mixing up the historical biblical background with the modern day. I encourage you to check your hermeneutic. Between your second and third paragraphs, you instantly make a jump from the Israel of Scripture to the modern day nation that is called “Israel.” But is this country still Israel proper, the people of God, as discussed in Scripture? Is not Jesus the true Israel, and the people of God all those who are grafted into him? (John 15, Gal. 2-3) It seems like you want to see something modern in the text, so you are trying to connect dots to make it happen. (This is an exegetical fallacy – imposing modern worldview upon the original text) The “North” in jewish literature, and particularly here in the Jewish apocalyptic literature of Ezekiel, could refer to a wide range of places above Palestine geographically. The Assyrians were also north of them, as were even the Babylonians. The etymological studies you’ve done on “meschech” and “tubal” are dubious, and they certainly do not provide “chillingly clear” support for this proposition. Supporting an argument from a modern day word that MAY have been derived from a 2,500 year old word does not show linguistic integrity, I’m afraid. (See D.A. Carson, Exegetical Fallacies; Gordon Fee, New Testament Exegesis, 79-90). With those being your three supporting points for drawing this distinction, I think that your conclusion is anything but “clear”!! At best it is slightly possible. Why not stick with the historical context of Ezekiel, and see that God disciplines his people in order to bring them back into right relationship with him, which ultimately points forward to Christ’s redemption on the cross and the reconciliation that comes there. We must avoid the temptation to draw modern day parallels all over Scripture, when the original author was speaking to a particular people about particular situations during a particular time in history.

Wishing you all the best in Christ,
    John

    • jeffcraw4d says :

John, I thank you for reading and taking time to thoughtfully comment. I would address TWO differing points we have. Number one – you hold to a theological viewpoint that God is done with Israel and that with the advent of Jesus the “new” Israel is the church or all those who are in Christ. I disagree. I will be quick to point out that you are not alone in your belief here, but neither am I. I take the firm approach that while God is working His purposes in and through the church, He is also NOT done with the nation of Israel. God made promises to Israel and He will keep those promises. There is still much to play out in the world as it relates to Israel. The re-birth of Israel as a nation on May 14, 1948 is a significant prophetic event that indicates that God’s timeline is moving forward. I have traveled in Israel and talked with Jews and Christians alike and it is clear when you are on the ground in that country that God is moving. This brings me to the second point of disagreement which is the issue of my hermeneutic . While I am taking a very literal view of the Ezekiel 38-39 prophecy, your hermeneutic seeks to limit the reading to the immediate historical context and then to spiritualize the text for today. The problem is that Ezekiel is in clear apocalyptic and prophetic mode in these chapters. What is described in Ezekiel 38-39 has not happened yet. So it seems to reason that it is still going to happen at some point in the future. To date, around 75% of the prophecies in the Bible have been fulfilled very literally, to the point that scholars are in awe (see the mention of Alexander the Great in Daniel 11). So we have around 25% of the prophecies of the Bible that are yet to be fulfilled. When the student of the Bible looks just one chapter back to Ezekiel 37, we see the prophecy of dry bones coming to life. I am of the belief, and not alone in this, that Ezekiel 37 was fulfilled literally when Israel was reborn as a nation in 1948. This is just over 60 years ago. In the world of biblical prophecy, 60+ years is nothing. The NEXT event on the timeline is the invasion of Israel by God of Magog, Ezekiel 37-38. So we watch. My linguistics you question are what they are. Simple linguistic and word studies. When you put it all together we are left with waiting. That an invasion is coming on Israel from the north I have no doubt. I personally believe it will come from Russia with a coalition. Hindsight is 20/20 and when it happens we will all know and it will all fit. Time will tell the role that Putin plays in all of this ultimately.

Blessings and thank you again for the opportunity to discuss.

      • Nathan Brasfield says :

I’m in full support of John’s points. As for your rebuttal that John’s statement about Israel means that God is “through” with them–far from it. God made promises to Israel, yes, but it was *always* for the purposes of working *through* Israel to the nations. It doesn’t mean God is done with Israel–it just means that Israel played a certain part in a specific portion of history.

So beside the biblical evidence–which, by the way, shouldn’t come to us through proof-texting but through following the entire sweep of the biblical story–it just doesn’t work to say that there is a special group of people even today that God is going to treat differently and to whom special promises don’t apply to the rest of those who worship God.

Perhaps the most concise way I can pose the dilemma is through a question: How do you define “Israel”? Just because someone establishes borders in a certain spot on the globe–and even if those borders largely correspond with the ancient borders of Israel–simply does not make it *biblical* Israel. Beyond that, we tend to view nations geographically when the biblical authors thought of nations primarily ethnically. Israel is primarily a people group. But even going in this direction for a moment, how do you define what Israel is today? As in, who is included? Those who are only full-blooded Jewish? What about those who are only half-Jewish? Or less than that? What if they’re full-blooded Jewish but have no concept of the God of Israel or just flat don’t believe in him?

Additionally, you remind John that this is biblical prophecy, thereby implying that Ezekiel is predicting the future. On this view, it doesn’t matter whether Israel had any idea what Ezekiel was talking about, because what really mattered is that someone would come along and put together the puzzle pieces here in 2014 and figure out that he’s actually talking about Russia–a nation he could have had no concept of, in all likelihood.

In short, your interpretation betrays a misunderstanding of what biblical prophecy even is in the first place, which is not primarily “fore-telling” but quite “forth-telling” in its messages for the people of Israel *in their own day*. A prophet functions as the mouthpiece for God, not just because God knows the future, but primarily because God has a lot of messages for his people that have to do with his justice, righteousness, peace, and grace and his care for them in their own day. I can’t imagine that it would make much sense for a prophet to go to Israel with a bunch of stuff that didn’t really matter for them or that wouldn’t have made any sense to them anyway.

And lastly, people have long done what you are doing. Misinterpreting the biblical texts because they think that the prophecies are puzzles to be solved that reveal how the Bible has been predicting events in our time these past millennia. And then revising those misinterpretations because they realize that how the present time pans out proves them wrong. All the while missing the actual point of the Bible, the trajectory of the entire biblical story, and ignoring where God would actually have us put our attention, and to focus our hope.

      • Tyler says :

        Jeff,

I too have concerns similar to John. He is correct to point out that your interpretation of Meshech as Moscow is fallacious. A quick search of Meshech shows that it was a nation-state in ancient Anatolia close to the Caucasus. The same goes for Tubal. The belief that Moscow was founded by the descendants of Meshech is legendary at best. Further, Daniel Block argues that attempts to connect Meshech and Tubal with Russian sites are anachronistic (Block, Ezekiel, NICOT, 2:434-435). Scholars are even divided upon whether the word translated as “Persia” here means Persia or Pathros (the name for Upper Egypt)!

I do want to inquire about your hermeneutic. How do you determine what is and what is not taken literally? Why, for instance, do you take these nations moving against Israel literally and not take Ezekiel’s statement that the people of Israel will not cut firewood for seven years because they will use the weapons of the nations for fuel (39:10)? Or do you see that as literal as well? I believe that Ezekiel is using hyperbole here to describe the utter destruction which God will wreak upon Israel’s enemies.

Moreover, could the repeated use of “seven” in the passage refer to completeness? This would make much better sense, in my opinion, of the passage. Instead of interpreting “seven months” of cleansing as a literal seven months, it is better to interpret it as “wholly cleansed.” This makes sense of the seven nations who attack Israel: Meshech, Tubal, Persia/Pathros, Ethiopia, Put, Gomer, and Beth-togarmah are not a literal seven nations (some of which compose Magog), but are representative of all of Israel’s enemies. Ezekiel is saying that God will wholly defeat every single one of Israel’s enemies. This reading makes understanding Revelation 20:8 much simpler.

A few more comments: I agree with John that the true Israel is Jesus Christ and I agree with his hermeneutic. I do not understand what Paul means in Romans 11, but I do believe that God is working and will work miraculously among the ethnically Jewish people to bring a remnant of them to himself. That said, I do not believe that we should confuse the nation-state of Israel with the people of God. I believe Paul when he says, “For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh. But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God” (Romans 2:28-29 NASB).

These are a few of my thoughts. I do understand that you (as a dispensational premillennialist) and I (as an amillennialist) will not agree upon this passage (and many others), but I do think that it is important to have these discussions in a civil manner. It is important, I think, for those in the church to know that these matters of interpretation are not settled even in evangelicalism. That is why I commented. I do have another question for you: Who are you reading on this?

May the God of all grace, mercy, and peace, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, be with you by his Spirit.

        Your brother in Christ,

        Tyler

Very well stated Jeff. Bringing out the literal versus the allegorical interpretation of scripture. Also your take of all the countries are great!! John you can find all of these countries to be found in Genesis 10, and they are easily tracked after the tower of Babel of where these families ended up. Love the article Jeff. Keep on studying!!

      • Glenn-and Kitty Hawkins says :

Thanks, Jeff, for standing strong against replacement theology. I am a firm believer (and assume you are as well) that replacement theology is a heresy, and those who hold to it are in danger of incurring the curse of God, when He told Abram, even before He created Israel as His chosen people, “those who curse you I will curse.” God is not done with literal Israel. As the rabbi/former Sanhedrin member/apostle to the gentiles Paul said about the Israel / gentile tension: But if some of the branches (i.e, Israel) were broken off, and you (gentiles), although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root of the olive tree, do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you.” — Romans 11:17-18.

      • Mike W says :

Excellent reply. When pondering replecement theology we have to keep in mind Paul’s words in Romans 9 – 11, particularly chapter 11. There is a clear distinction between the church and His chosen people. We have been grafted in along with the “elect” from Israel, we never replaced them. God’s promises of Israel’s borders also have never been realized, and it is clear this is also a future prophetic realization.

      • randokillriz says :

I’m unsure if you understand the Israel of today, so very respectfully I want to show you a few things about who the people are that are in charge over there. First I need you to know, if you consider yourself a Zionist, you are associating yourself with Racists. This video proves the racism is institutionalized there and it resembles Mississippi before the abolition of slavery. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=irhw6bj5pa0 Also I take it you are a Christian and I respect all religions but I myself find my spirituality in science. There are quite a few things that science can’t explain. So you don’t think my words come from a place where they are biased, I would say I’m independent. If it turns out that the recent discovery of a roman generals personal journal depicting an ancient military psyop where they created out of thin air a story about a very gentle messiah named Jesus, in an attempt to control a faction of hard line Judaism extremists. It didn’t really work that well at least not the way they intended, if this is found to be faked, well you must know that the last State Rabbi of Israel stated on many occasions that, Gentiles which you are I assume, were placed on earth by god to be slaves of the chosen, no better than an animal. You will find if go to Israel there is a good chance you will be spat upon while wearing your Christian outfit. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ddGKqOeDygE
Next and finally I think you should know what would happen if a country were to invade Israel. Their nuclear arsenal has never been inspected. After we the US gave them our nuclear secrets in the sixties, they have non stop created a production line of nuclear weapons. It is speculated it is the worlds largest collection of nukes. So it should not surprise you they have a plan for all those nukes. It is called the Samson option, it states if any country invades Israel they will throw a nuke at every major city on the planet regardless of how many of their own live there. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samson_Option
This Wikipedia article is one of the most edited. It does not read as it use to. What it did state was that they would fire their weapons at everyone, essentially holding the world hostage and mirroring a terrorist state. Today Benji. Was bragging on twitter about how he was bombing innocent people. They are starving Palestinians, bulldozing their homes and in most cases the settlers who are not that well off will just move in to a Palestinian’s home, that has been there for over 100 years and was never apart of Israel and had been owned by the same family. They will just walk up with an armed IDF soldier and evict and move their stuff out and move the settlers stuff in. This is highly illegal but although they have committed more war crimes then any other nation on the planet. They are not charged. To do so you will be called anti-Semite. I am not anti-Semite, I do however have a problem with a country whose leaders consider themselves the master race, force a people they look down on into slavery. The average Israeli cannot see the evil that is done in there name, because they are the most propagandized people on the planet. If Hitler had just come to power, there is no doubt in my mind, he would align himself with Israel, before Japan or Italy. Any people that consider themselves “better” than all other races is serious trouble and will always end badly.

One of the best comments I have seen in an article. Instead of addressing the points made, the author of the article jumps right into a adhom attack “You hold that God..is done with Israel.” I cannot speak for the original post but I will adress this. The author of this article has laid out a plan/guidline based on MAPS. Yes, not timing of these events and defining through scripture who Israel is but rather through speculation and abusing the text. It would take to long to explain, and lets be honest, any argument by man cannot change ones mind. But think about this. Christ (God) clearly defines who Israel is and who they are not,Romans 9 and where Israel is located (hint, its not in the middle east or wherever else a government declares it.) i.e Heb 11:16. Heb 12:22.

To the author. The United Nations declared Israel a country like you pointed out. Not God, unless you want to show how God speaks through the UNited Nations? You are using the news and world maps looking at the bible and saying “Wow this must be it”. In fact its not. Im not meaning to attack you, that is not my intention. Rather, your using newspaper exegisis. What are you going to do if your wrong about this article? I know you used a lot of “coulds, maybe, perhaps” and that in itself will allow you some leeway. But if your so sure, and as a Pastor, perhaps you should say “This is it” and stand by it?

Harry Truman knewl his Bible. He felt the dry bones coming to life as he met with Israeli respresentatives in the Oval Office in ’48 to offer America’s support for creation of the State of Israel. Realizing the enormous prophetic implications, Truman broke down into tears and became nearly inconsolable having to be comforted in the arms of an attending Rabbi.

I disagree, I think the Psalm 83 prophecy is next. The Ezekiel, or Gog of Magog is the Revelation “Day of the Lord” prophecy, or at least the two aligning one behind the other. The Psalm 83 prophecy can be seen as near complete now and is awing when you realize your watching God’s plan, who saw the end from the beginning, coming together.

      • DAO says :

Can you clarify something for me–you state above–“The NEXT event on the timeline is the invasion of Israel by God of Magog, Ezekiel 37-38″– Is this correct– God of Magog or is this supposed to be Gog of Magog– I’m sorry– I’m just a little confused :\ Thank you and God Bless (great article by the way!)

John, i’m confused as to why you’d question the legitimacy of modern day Israeli’s as truly “God’s People”. I’m not trying to debate you i’m honestly curious and i hope you take the time to respond buddy. Are modern day Israeli’s not the true blue descendants of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob? These modern day Israeli’s are the descendants of Hebrew Peoples that kept The Law Of Moses and they mostly, even the secular Jews, always had a yearning in their hearts for Jerusalem. These modern day Israeli’s are descended from people that continually claimed to be Jewish even when it was very bad for them to do so. It would of been a lot more easy to pretend to be Gentiles or Goyim all those thousands of years in all those nations that were persecuting wouldn’t it? I’m just really confused when people try to dispute the legitimacy of modern day Israeli’s. Please inform me if i am in error in your opinion. I keep my nose in The Old Testament and i seek light and knowledge. For some reason my Lord keeps me alive and on this earth when i BEG Him to let me go.

      • Tony Baker says :

Go back to David or even Abraham and realize there was two promises, the scepter promise and the birthright promise. The Jews, which is one tribe of total Israel, held the scepter promise. The birthright promise filtered on to Ephraim and Manasseh which can easily be seen in the UK and America as the nations of greatness and those promises now stand fulfilled. Include in the new covenant and realize that the NT phrase ‘Israel’ is an all inclusive spiritual term that takes in a great deal including the “Bride”. On the “Day of the Lord” all of this is going to be brought together in the Kingdom of God.

    • Daymon says :

John, Revelation in the Bible is speaking futuristically about times to come. You can draw your own conclusions about who Gog and Magog are, but nonetheless, Christ will wipe them out and blood will rise as high as the horses bridle in the Valley of Armageddon. If you know World History really well, you can track where we are through the last 2 Chapters of Daniel. Quite a bit has already happened, all real and all dealing with Israel. Its a much larger stretch to say the what hasn’t happened is figurative and doesn’t involve Israel. Its always been about Israel. Nearly the whole Bible is how God has dealt with Israel and those who come against her. Keep an open mind to prophesy because we don’t know every detail.

      • Tony Baker says :

I honestly believe the Bible is the story of Israel, both historically and prophetically. There is world history outside the realm of what the KJV Bible records. People get real messed up because they do not realize the importance of the 12 tribes (of which the Jews were only 1, Judah) and how God’s promises to Abraham were two fold as in the scepter promise and the birthright promise. Jesus had to come from the blood line of David which was the scepter promise. The birthright promise is very easily seen in Ephraim and Manasseh or the UK and America which were to be “Great Nations”. People overlook this but think of the miracle of the UK and America, there greatness only came about in the past few hundred years which is a tiny amount of time since Abraham. The UK shot to world greatness with a world wide empire where the “sun never sat on the British empire”. On the heels of that, America shot to world greatness and by WWII was to be undenied. But those promises stand fulfilled. America has been in decline since WWII. And it is obvious that WWII took it all out of the UK, especially when we required there navy be sunk. But this is another prophetic promise fulfilled, just as big as the 1948 promise. From this point forward it is all going to be about the King of the South (Islam), the King of the North and “Asian Hordes from the East” (or Gog of Magog). And it is all going to take part with Jerusalem being ground zero. A great deal may happen in Syria and a great deal may happen in Iraq and Turkey but the important stuff will be in Israel and finally in the valley of Magedo. I sense all of this is about one wayward gun shot from being ignited and there will be no stopping it. For those wondering about “America” (and I am as patriotic as any, it hurts me terribly where we are at), our stock mkt can be wiped out in an hour at any time and it is phony. Also, our stock mkt is the last semblance of wealth of this country that is allowing us to think everything is okay and we have a chance to fix things. Nothing could be further from the truth. We have been done in for a while now, we just dont know it. The world see’s us for what we are now, a broken debtor that will soon be on the streets. Russia and China can destroy the dollar as the world reserve currency and our stock mkt will crash making 1929 look like a picnic. About half of America will kill each other in the ensuing panic in Walmart riots. I hate to be so bleak but it is what I see. God bless us all and I consider it a privilege to have seen what God has allowed me to know.

    • helen says :

In revelation 20 verse 8-10 it mentions gog of magog again .It refers to him as satan the devil The natural Israelites ceased being Gods chosen people when they put him to death. In matthew 21:42-43 it points this out by saying, The stone that the builders rejected, this has become the chief cornerstone Jesus said this is why I say to you,The Kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation producing its fruits. If you know anything about the pharasees of the Bible, then you know they were the leaders of the Israelite nation. They made it their goal to persecute Jesus constantly and to undermine him to keep the Israelites from recognizing he spoke the truth about them. When it was time for Jesus to die it was they who paid judas 30 pieces of silver to betray him. that is why they are no longer Gods chosen people. In mattew 3:9 says do not presume to say to yourselves ,we have Abraham as our father for I say to you God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones. In Matthew 23:38 it says look your house is abandoned to you. Mattew 24 1-51 gives the announcement of the fall of the jews.

      • Teresa Mayer says :

To Helen, “The Kingdom of God” is not an earthly kingdom, but a spiritual one, these are Jesus’ words. He did not change who “the chosen people of God” are, which is Israel. Their blessing was given to another. Why did God choose a certain race in the first place? It was to establish God’s Word as true and fulfill His prophecy about Jesus. Next look in Revelation in the end times and see where God saves “all the jews!”, just like He did in Nineveh when He sent Jonah.

revelation 20:7-10 puts this battle after the 1000 year reign of Christ.

    • jeffcraw4d says :

Hi Jamie – glad you mentioned Revelation 20. Yes, a future war, post-millenial reign, is mentioned here, but this war is not the same war as mentioned in Ezekiel 38-39. In Revelation, the armies of the earth are gathered from the four winds. In Ezekiel, we have a specific list of nations and not the whole world involved. In Revelation, the end of the war is immediately followed by the Great White Throne of Judgment. In Ezekiel, the war is followed by seven months of clean-up and the restoration of Israel.

So two different passages, and two different wars.

The problem with this theory is that Putin’s Russian military is in shambles, and is completely incapable of true offensive action beyond its own borders. Try correlating your theory with the archives at http://www.strategypage.com, and you’ll see that the Russia we think we see on TV is not the Russia of real life. The Gog you should fear is probably more likely a reformed Ottoman Empire, or some confederation of Muslims under Turkish authority. Just my 2 cents…

This is why Russia needs a coalition of nations to help her. But I would also question your analysis of Russia’s military. Clearly Putin has been rebuilding their capacity and preparing for expansion.

Very interesting post.

So the faith you hold would encourage you to foster war and send our citizen’s sons and daughters to kill sons and daughters of another culture all based on what you believe to be historical religious prophecies? You most likely denounce the ideologies of radical Islamists who have murdered many US citizens — infidels (their word for anyone who does not share their radical Islamist beliefs) and plot to murder more, and yet the only difference is that, this is your radical ideology and they have theirs. And sadly, you are right about not being alone in your beliefs. Shouldn’t faith offer more hope than this? Have you seen war?

“I have seen war. I have seen war on land and sea. I have seen blood running from the wounded. I have seen men coughing out their gassed lungs. I have seen the dead in the mud. I have seen cities destroyed. I have seen children starving. I have seen the agony of mothers and wives. I hate war.” Franklin Delano Roosevelt (Inscribed on the Roosevelt Memorial, Washington DC).

  8. Joe P. says :

Points are never clear when you have to tell us they’re clear, and prophecies are never fascinating when you have to tell us they’re fascinating.

What is the point of playing guessing games here (“Could Gomer be Ukraine?” Beth-togarmah? Uh, how about….Germany?)? Countless biblical “scholars” have played similar games for centuries and have only ended up looking like fools when current events don’t pan out according to their guesses / predictions / prophecies.

Pat Robertson guaranteed us the world was going to end in 1982. Plenty of bible scholars predicted that Hitler was the Antichrist. That Stalin was the Antichrist. That Mussolini was the Antichrist. That Kruschev was the Antichrist. And the list goes on.

For thousands of years, people have wholeheartedly believed they were living in the End Times, and tried to fit haphazard pieces of current events together in an attempt to show how that belief was right. Perhaps an efficient mechanism for making one think more highly of one’s own scholarly savvy, but in the end, they’ve all been wrong–and have looked like fools in the process.

Something to think about before we start making wild guesses about current events and acting like we’re delivering some wonderful insight into what’s happening around the world.

  9. rich says :

I am not a Bible Scholar but have read a few things on my journey. When I read passages about Israel being revived it is always in the context of them returning (repenting ) to the Lord and then God restores them. If Israel is the church then that has happened. If Israel is the ancient land, then that has not happened. The Jews in Israel may repent and your interpretation be true but at this point in time this current “restored” Israel is a man made counterfeit created by those seeking a nationalist identity. I beleive God uses circumstances but this return BY THE HAND OF THE LORD is clearly condtional. While people do get saved in Israel it is right now overwhelming anti-Christ (Jesus).

Second, while your interpretation (credit to Hal Lindsey from the 70’s) may be correct, I have read that it is a relatively new idea and not a view held by early church fathers. I this view is less than 100 years old, why do you so strongly defend it?

It would be great too if you could reference some of your interpretations. Sadly things get past from one person to another “this means this, that means that” , until the truth just isn’t.

    Thanks

Very stimulating exchange here. As a pastor, and 30+ year student of biblical prophesy, I tend tp lean towards Jeff’s position! Putin and a coalition-to-come are inevitable. And, unfortunately, due to the rapid deterioration of America under Mr Obama, the door is now open! Lift up your heads, church, for your redemptions draweth nigh!

    • Gary McGregor says :

I’ve seen many decades pass by. If you think the state of America now is deterioration, you must have forgotten or weren’t alive to remember how bad things got during the years LBJ, Nixon, Ford, and Carter were in office. Things weren’t too great during Clinton’s first term in office either. We had Vietnam, protests, and drug use and violence were shooting through the roof. And things like the abortion rate in the 1980s, when Reagan was President? SO much worse than it is now!! I don’t know where people get this idea of “oh things are so bad and only getting worse.”

      • Dan says :

Mr McGregor- I’m not sure how you can think that we are better off now?? At least during the times you mentioned…there was still a sense of National Pride. Americans were willing to die for America……now we have a generation being taught that our forefathers were a bunch of devils. We have an undercurrent of liberal teachers who seek to raise a nation of communist minded, anti capitalist, entitlement seekers. I had to pull my children from public schools because they teach aggresive anger and hatred of the fore fathers, etc. My son came home last year from school talking about how “its just not right that someone would buy something for $2.00 and sell it for $4.00″. I explained that it was called “business” and “profit”…..and he stated that his teacher thinks its terrible and we should “all pitch-in and pool our money”. You can’t tell me it’s not worse now. We have a generation being raised to hate the very country they live in. (and don’t even get me started about the assault on Christianity in this nation)

Good day sir. But you are sadly mistaken.

      • Jan says :

At least LBJ, Nixon, Ford and Carter, and yes, even Clinton were AMERICANS.

    • helen says :

The reason we have earthly governments instead of the creator is because people didn’t want to follow the rules of God. They wanted to do things their way and still receive gods blessing. That is why true Christians have nothing to do with the government at all .They know that God will destroy them along with false religion. Luke 4:5,6 the devil shows Jesus all the kingdoms of the earth and tells him I will give you all this authority and their glory , because IT HAS BEEN HANDED OVER TO ME AND I GIVE IT TO WHOMEVER I WISH. Anyone who supports the earthly governments in any way at all will be destroyed when God brings vengeance on the nations .This includes ALL nations. That is why rev12:7,8 says And war broke out in heaven and Michael and his angels battled with the dragon and the dragon and its angels battled but they did not prevail nor was a place found for them any longer in Heaven. So down the great dragon was hurled, the original serpent , the one called devil and satan, who is MISLEADING THE ENTIRE INHABITED EARTH. People who vote are dependent on enemies of God rather than God himself. Satan is a deceiver so is anyone under his control. That is why the government is so corrupt. Anyone who has the mark of the beast will not get life.

  15. John says :

“An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas.”

So, what is that sign? It is the sign of overcoming tribulations and understanding the meaning of trials, suffering, and the cross. The prophet Jonah received great mercy from God—Divine wisdom—but not before he had been cast into tribulation, and through this tribulation he received the gift that he had requested: wisdom, eternal life—a foretaste of eternal life. Thus did our Lord Jesus Christ say. So should you also be emulating this example. He Himself emulated His own servant Jonah, who was once unwise but later became a God-seer and prophet, when He said, so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. He would have to endure mockery and death, and all those tribulations that we are talking about today.

There is no other path to the knowledge of God, and there is no other path to the knowledge of eternal life, other than this path. Why? Because it is God’s will. A Christian should through their own life experience be cast out of this world, oppose this world, so that having rejected the world he might have the opportunity to receive eternal life; to have the opportunity to receive a higher understanding of the eternal ways of God. We have to reject the temporary in order to receive the eternal.

Israel is a modern nation state– full of drinking, gambling, and any other vices legal as in other nations. All the early Church fathers explained that the new Israel is the Church. These “bibical prophecies” only first starting appearing in the 19th century. You are far from Christian tradition when you look for signs. Do not put your hope in princes and powers of this world. You will only be disappointed. Instead, seek God’s mercy for your soul, which is what He calls us all to do.

    with love in Christ,
    John

    • Bonnie says :

John, what you are forgetting is that God never said He was doing this for Israel because they deserved it or was good…He’s doing it because of His PROMISE to Abraham, Issiac and Jaccob. Israel in the bible is ISRAEL the nation. Not the Christians. Much has already been fulfilled, much to come. Jeff is right.

  16. Cindy says :

I thought that Jesus came and fulfilled all of the profecies of the Old Testament. I believe that we should read the word with our spiritial minds and not our physical minds. 17. Paul says :

Revelations chapter 13, tells about one of the heads of the beast wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed; and all the world wondered after the beast. Since Putan, I have always thought of the beast as the old Russia.

        Helen,

How does your interpretation provide pastoral care, comfort, instruction, and exhortation to the seven churches in the Roman province of Asia in the 1st century AD? Premillennialism is the champion of anachronism. We have to make sure that our interpretations fit with the circumstances of the original audience. Yes, there can be more than one level of fulfillment with prophecy, but if our interpretations do not have relevance for the original audience then they are incorrect.

May the grace, mercy, and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit,

    Jeff,

I’d really love to see a response to the comment I made last night but don’t yet see it as having been posted on your comment section. I think the site said it went into moderation.

I want to ask another question, one that has been troubling me since last night: What happens when Putin dies and Christ has not yet returned? Do you understand how dangerous this kind of prediction is? You can destroy people’s faith if you are wrong. All of your work here is speculative yet it is being taken by those who are commenting as the gospel truth.

Further, I may be wrong, but it seems that you and others here believe that prophecy can only be fulfilled one way: historically/literally. The position you advocate here is one of suspended fulfillment, that is, that Ezekiel 38-39 will be fulfilled historically/literally but that its fulfillment has been postponed. The position I believe John is taking, and the position I take, on Ezekiel 38-39 is one of historical/spiritual fulfillment. That means that I believe Ezekiel is prophesying that all of Israel’s enemies will be utterly destroyed by God. This is something of great comfort to a people who are living in exile under their enemies in Babylon. This is also comforting to the church which continually suffers in a world hostile to Christ. To see an example of what I’m talking about, look to James’ interpretation of Amos 9:11-12 in Acts 15:15-21. In the context of the Book of Amos, it appears that Amos is talking about the resoration of the Davidic monarchy and its rule over Edom and the nations. James, however, realizes that this prophecy actually means that Christ, the Son of David, will rule over the nations and that the Gentiles will become a part of his people.

    Blessings,

    Tyler

JUDAH WHICH RETURNED TO THE LAND OF ISRAEL IN 1948 DO NOT CARRY THE NAME ISRAEL. THIS SAID, I FIND THAT THREE INTERESTING PARTS OF EZEKIEL. 38:8 –IN THE LATTER YEARS THOU COME INTO THE LAND— , THIS IS THE COUNTRY. EZEKIEL 38:16, AND THOU SHALT COME UP AGAINST MY PEOPLE ISRAEL, EPHRAIM AND MANASSAH. THESE ARE NOT THE SAME. JUDAH IS IN THE LAND AND NOT ISRIAL THE PEOPLE. 38:18 –AND IT SHAL COME TO PASS THAT GOG SHALL COME AGAINST THE LAND OF ISRAEL. 39:7, IN THE MIDST OF MY PEOPLE ISRAEL THEN 39:25 NOW I WILL BRING AGAIN THE CAPTIVIY OF JACOB ( ALL 12 TRIBES) .
THIS TELL ME THAT THERE ARE TWO GOROUPS O PEOPLE WITH WHOM GOG IS GOING TO FIGHT. JUDAH IN THE LAND OF ISRAEL AND EPHRIIN AND MANASSAH.

Nice, that none of the self proclaiming ‘christs’ here realise, that Putin & todays Russia is most likely more “christian”, than this “anti-christian”, “satan-led” (NeoCon-)Govs of the US, EU and also Israel.

How does it come (and how much insanity and stupidity does it need) to think and believe, that the jews, who’s richest and most prominent people are the #1 driving forces in running down western (former christian) societies and screwing this planet, are really the “god’s choosen people”?!?

And who, when not this guys, so busy in doing all that “anti-christian” dirt, should be “satan’s army”?!?
What’s “satanic”, when not the “work” and “efforts” of them?!?

And Jesus Christ already told and spoke about all this – but maybe “jew/zionist-brainwashed” evanglicalists aren’t able to read or unable to think by themselves.

Question: the prophecy against Gog which you reference (Ezekiel 38-39) ends with the Lord restoring the fortunes of Israel, described as a time “when I will pour out my Spirit upon the house of Israel.” (39:29) As a Christian reading Ezekiel, this seems to be a clear reference to God’s actions at Pentecost (Acts 2) which took place in the first-century. Would that not mean that “whatever” is being described in 38-39 (it is clearly enigmatic) would have had to have been fulfilled before the first century?

  38. Augustine says :

    John,

I hesitate to respond because I am afraid that doing so might only encourage the opinion that this kind of drivel is worth the time and effort. I do so because Truth needs a friend, and it doesn’t look like you have found one yet on this site, so I will try my best to fill in. Historically, you are correct in all of your assertions. Jesus is for Christians the New Israel. This is not “replacement” theology as Jeff asserts, but “fulfillment” theology, in as much as Jesus and the apostles were all Jews, and the Church among the nations are those grafted onto that root (i.e. the Church of Jerusalem). This is how anyone calling themselves a Christian for the last 2000 years has understood the scriptures, until the last 100 years or so, as you point out, when as a response to the challenge of darwinian science (among other historical causes) evangelicals sought to read the bible exhaustively as a historical textbook. Of course the Holocaust has changed the urgency of that reading and in many ways has justified it. One of the positive outcomes brought to consciousness through a very literal reading has been a renewed appreciation for the Jewishness of Jesus (New Perspective on Paul, etc.), a real gain to theology and the dignity of the Jewish tradition.

But this (re)turn does not mean anything has fundamentally changed with respect to how the Christian tradition has understood things. The natural children of Abraham have not been forgotten. “A remnant” has always been preserved because God is faithful (to himself and to his promises), and Paul envisions the salvation of “all Israel”, though it is highly ambiguous as to what this might mean, from universal salvation to a statement of the salvation of the church.

You are also shrewd to point out, John, that Jeff’s incredibly naive assumption about the historical continuity between Israel the people of God and the modern nation-state causes his interpretive downfall. Allow me to respond to Jeff’s response about how things are “on the ground in Israel” with my own anecdote. I myself was in Jerusalem 4 months ago, and our guide, a Jew, made sure to reinforce on multiple occasions that “Jewishness” is not the same thing as being “Israeli” because one is a “religious identity” and the other is a “geo-political” identity. Moreover, on our stop at Herzl’s grave, we received a lecture in why this man was a modern Jewish saint: “…because he realized that the scattered people of Israel didn’t need to wait for God to act to unify themselves into a country. They could have a secular state, won through political struggle, rather than wait for a God who may not come at all.” Anyone who knows anything about the history of the nation-state of israel knows that it uses its religious identity to leverage for a political one, one which is used to justify violence against Palestinians. Jeff et al. have responded that it doesn’t matter if they are faithful, only that they are Israeli. Apparently in their rush to “all Israel will be saved” they have passed over Rom 9:6.

Jeff has responded to you that:

“your [John's] hermeneutic seeks to limit the reading to the immediate historical context and then to spiritualize the text for today. The problem is that Ezekiel is in clear apocalyptic and prophetic mode in these chapters.”

Of course, he doesn’t seem aware of the internal contradictoriness of saying that you are “limiting” in your hermeneutic and then immediately claiming that you “spiritualize” with it, given that spiritual interpretation has always been a means of expanding the meaning of text, rather than limiting it. What he means to say, of course, is that you aren’t taking the bible “literally enough” for his taste. I have always found this claim, especially when used by someone who in the next sentence says that “clearly” a text is prophetic when the whole point of prophecy is its ambiguity, to be amusing. One can only point to the work of St. Augustine (de doctrina christiana) and say: “to interpret a text written by the Spirit spiritually is to interpret it literally”, and hope that the Spirit who inspired it will move to unblock his myopia.

What is most scary to me, something no one else has yet commented on, is the closet American Manifest Destiny in this article (at the end), and the tacit call to arms against other Christians (I have many Russian-Christian friends who were not amused by this post), justified by a felonious interpretation of the Bible. It almost makes me wonder if the true enemy from North isn’t a reference to North America!

    The sign of Jonah indeed.

  39. Isaac says :

Although, I respect your Dr . Crawford,
After reading the post and your rebuttal to the alternative views of the others. It’s seem like you try to makes connection with your limited understanding geo-political issues and how that is connection to God’s Plan for his future of his people. This post seems less of connecting the dots and more of creating a sense of fear and trying to predict the end times when are coming , when as the created we can only guess but will never know the true time. Instead of trying to speak about matters and how they connect that you are not an expert in ( politics) and something else you are not an expert at ( actually predicting the end time or statics). You should focus on the great commission and what God has called us to do. Because while Puttin is “planning” an attack , millions in American and Abroad have still yet to know the love of Jesus. This is all well and a good hypothesis and all, it not what God commanded. If you are pastor of church, you should really focus on how you are loving and leading them, not trying to predict some you can not, with information you only hear 2nd hand, and making predictions you as the created. You telling us stuff as Christians we know the world is going to end.We got the message now knowing that, what should the response be. If you haven’t noticed God already defeated death. So why are so afraid.

Odd that you condemn Putin when they have pulled themselves out of atheism to become an orthodox Christian nation protecting the church and Christian values. The time for labeling Russia the anti Christ is over. Perhaps it is time to turn the compass and mirror on the USA

  40. Ben Prather says :

Note: Cush refers to all lands upstream from Egypt on the Nile River. Modern Sudan would be part of Cush, and is a major bed of terrorists today.

I have always read this prophesy as describing events between a return of Israel as a secular nation and the miraculous deliverance that returns Israel to a Godly nation, and clearing the way for the construction of a new Temple, required for the events described in Matthew 24, II Thessalonians 2 and Revelation 11, to be fulfilled.

  41. p2alm says :

i just want to ask a few questions about a few passages in Ezekiel 38-39…

~ and you (Gog) will say, ‘I will go up against the land of unwalled villages. I will go against those who are at rest, that live securely, all of them living without walls and having no bars or gates, [Ezekiel 38:11 NASB] (parentheses added by me)

The above verse says Gog will go up against Israel which is described as a “land of unwalled villages” and a people who “live securely”. Can this be said of Israel today?

~ ‘Thus says the Lord GOD, “Are you (Gog) the one of whom I spoke in former days through My servants the prophets of Israel, who prophesied in those days for many years that I would bring you against them? [Ezekiel 38:17 NASB] (parentheses added by me)

If Gog is Putin, the above verse says we should be able to find him in the pages of the other OT prophets. Where? You’d be hard-pressed to find this “other” individual but there is one individual that you will find: the Antichrist.

    And, consider this last passage:

~ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, “Now I will restore the fortunes of Jacob and have mercy on the whole house of Israel; and I will be jealous for My holy name. “They will forget their disgrace and all their treachery which they perpetrated against Me, when they live securely on their own land with no one to make them afraid. “When I bring them back from the peoples and gather them from the lands of their enemies, then I shall be sanctified through them in the sight of the many nations. “Then they will know that I am the LORD their God because I made them go into exile among the nations, and then gathered them again to their own land; and I will leave none of them there any longer. “I will not hide My face from them any longer, for I will have poured out My Spirit on the house of Israel,” declares the Lord GOD. [Ezekiel 39:25-29 NASB]

If Ezekiel 38-39 is a pre-Armageddon invasion of Israel led by Russia, how can Israel, afterward, “live securely on their own land with no one to make them afraid.” Is there no Battle of Armageddon coming? Is there no Antichrist coming? Does everyone see the disconnect?

Ezekiel 38-39 is just another retelling of Armageddon from Ezekiel’s perspective. Gog is none other than the Antichrist of whom the prophets spoke in their Books and the Battle of Gog of Magog is none other than the Battle of Armageddon.

It’s also worth mentioning that the most trusted Bible maps place Magog in Turkey which is in sync with the rest of the geography mentioned in Ezekiel 38-39. Look these up: IVP Atlas of Bible History, The New Moody Atlas of the Bible, The Holman Bible Atlas, Zondervan Atlas of the Bible, Harper Collins Atlas of Bible History, ESV Bible Atlas, Baker’s Bible Atlas, The Macmillan Bible Atlas and IVP New Bible Atlas to name a few.

This is laughable. To call Putin some kind of evil tyrant when he is defending his people from the moral perversions of Europe and America. He is a strong leader for his country, much like Theodore Roosevelt was for us. Maybe you should be inserting Obama’s name in the place of Putin here.
Also you should do some research on the Kiekastain empire.Which converted to Judaism as a state religion for political reasons. The “Jews” so called living in the “man made” state of Israel have no ties to genetically to the Jews of the old testament, but rather are descendants from the Kieks. The state of Israel is just an example of man trying to control the will of God. If it is God’s will he will do it without man’s interference.

  43. Student of eschatology says :

There are two instances of Gog and Magog. Ezekiel’s telling of the scythian invasion (Ch 38/39), and John’s account of the release of Gog-satan at the end of the thousand years. They differ from each other in several ways, but also parallel each other. There are ONLY two instances.

The Hebrew word Rosh means head or chief or leader. It has nothing to do with Russia AT ALL. Twisting Scripture to try and make it so will spread confusion.

@Jeff, God would be so disappointed in the writing of this. You alone are what’s wrong with christianity today. You have the thoughts that you can control what is coming of this world. Well I hate to tell you this, but only one person knows this. God laughs in the face of you and anyone that thinks they may know what is going to happen. You, guy are what turn so so so many people away from my lord and savior. Please stop trying to bring political haste to a known fact that is already. It just brings haste and unpromise to the world as we know it. If you want to know what the word “Christianity” really truly refers to, please look into the series of discipleship. For we all know, those who are a disciple of christ, not “Christians”. If you truly know what the word “Christian” means, then you as a pastor would have never posted this as a disciple of christ. You have so much to learn as a believer in christ. Please step aside from your job. And look more into the word of GOD.

    Thanks!

So I take it the vast majority of people responding have disregarded significant portions of the OT and covenant relationships established between God and the patriarchs. The promise is not simply to ethnic Jews. Please re-read Gen 1,3,6,9,12,15,17. Additionally read Ester 8:11-17… Specifically v 17. If you’ve missed the point that God’s covenants have been given to use as a blessing for honoring God… and those covenants are between man and God.

This was the first time I had actually heard the term “replacement” theology. It is actually covenantal theology and it is what connects God’s first interaction with man to the second coming of Christ. When used properly without presupposition it could be termed inclusion theology as the blessing was to all who believe… not just ethic Jews.

    • Student of eschatology says :

The premillennialists can’t handle the fact that Jesus said to the leaders of their precious natural apostate Israel these words:

“Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it”

They think that God still honors ethnic Israel. God honors SPIRITUAL ISRAEL. Those who believe on Y’shua ha Moschiach ARE Israel. Those who do not can claim to be Jews all they like, but they aren’t Jews at all. The promises come through Y’shua, the heir.

      • Mike W says :

I can handle those words just fine. Unlike you and other replacement theologians, I prefer to put those words in context.

      • glenn hawkins says :

Student, So I assume that you’re taking the “don’t confuse me with the facts” approach.  How many prophecies were directed toward the LAND and the NATION of Israel?  Let’s not forget that the COVENANT He made with ABRAM revolved around the land and the seed–as in the nation.  Definitely understand the point of distinction about spiritual and national Israel.  I also understand about not every last person who claims to be part of Israel are not (Romans 4).  But did not God say that He set His love on Israel, the nation just because He wanted to?

To say that the specific promises made to the land and national Israel are now null and void is tantamount to saying that God has reneged on His promises.  And if God did that, then one could rightly accuse God of lying–bad move!  Let’s not forget who passed between the pieces in Gen 15.  Abram AND God?  or only God Himself?  He swore BY HIMSELF that He would fulfill the covenant He made with Abram and His descendants.  As we know, the very reason why He put Abram into a deep sleep was because He KNEW the humans with which He was cutting the covenant were not going to keep their end of the deal.

BTW, I am a staunch premillennialist.  The Lord Jesus is going to come back to protect His brethren according to the flesh when their backs are against the wall, because of His promise in Matt 24 (Revelation 19).  I am also a classic premill guy, holding to the post-trib rapture theory, as we greet the coming King and we, who are alive and remain, will be changed, but the dead in Christ will rise first.  Glory!

      • Student of eschatology says :

No Mr. Hawkins, I’m taking the “I read the Bible and not Hal Lindsey and Tim LaHaye and all the other false teachers pocketing millions off of poorly exegeted Scripture with their fanciful books” approach.

The promises: they were to Abraham and to his seed. The seed is CHRIST. (Gal 3:16). We receive IN CHRIST those promises. Israel has actually never been a land mass, but a PEOPLE GROUP. And that people according to Peter is the Church. He uses the same designations used of Israel in the OT (Exodus 19:6) to describe the Church in the NT (1 Peter 2:9).

        Holy nation
        Royal Priesthood
        Peculiar people

As for premillennialism, you’d be hard pressed to find an early church father who was a pre-mil, although I know there were some, but they were small in number abd certainly didn’t adhere to the Scripture-twisting baloney coming out of the evangelical land of unwalled villages.

As for the harpazo, it occurs on the Last Day. It is the changing of the living Believers into glorified bodies.

      • Tyler says :

        Mr. Hawkins,

Student has done a good job of pointing Galatians 3:16 out as the correct understanding of Genesis 12:7. So, I will discuss Matthew 24. It is not a prophecy about the return of Christ but rather about the destruction of Jerusalem and specifically the Temple. Christ does not begin to discuss his return until 24:36, the first 35 verses are dedicated to the prophecy of the Temple’s destruction. In 24:3, Jesus’ disciples ask “When will these things happen?” in response to his prophecy in v. 2 that “not one stone [of the Temple] will be left upon another…” In 70 AD, the Roman general Titus came and fulfilled this prophecy by completely destroying Jerusalem and the Temple. In fact, Jerusalem was renamed as Aelia Capitolina and rebuilt by Hadrian as a Roman colony. I would highly recommend reading the rather large section of Sam Storms’ book Kingdom Come on the Olivet Discourse.

May the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you,

        Tyler

      • Cindy Tavel says :

Most are still trying to figure this thing out with the mind. The bible is for your spirit. After salvation, get born again. Jesus said you have to be born again to see, or enter the kingdom. He came to shed His blood for our sins so that we could be connected back to the Father and to restore the kingdom that the first Adam had lost. Jesus fulfilled all of the prophecies of the Old Testament. The Old Testament starts with Genesis and ends Act 9. The New Covenant starts with Acts 10. The enemy will use anything, ex specially a scary end time message to lie to you, to keep us from knowing who we are, the authority we already have and that he is already defeated. Jesus came to set the captives free, your mind is what is captive. Ask Jesus to set you free from religion, theology. In love Sisters and Brothers, Cindy

Gog Magog of Revelartion 20 is not the same as Ezekiel38 and 39. Revelation 20’s Gog Magog war is led by Satan. also Russia is the bear in Daniel7

    • Student of eschatology says :

Max, you’re HALF right. The Gog of Revelation 20 is indeed Satan himself. Russia however, is not the bear of Daniel 7. Daniel’s four beasts are Babylon, Media-Persia, Greece and Rome.

      • p2alm says :

Consider that Daniel names three of the kingdoms he prophesies about in the text: Babylon [Daniel 2:37-38 and numerous other references considering Daniel lived in this kingdom] 2) Media-Persia [8:20, 10:1, 10:13, 10:20, 11:2] and 3) Greece [8:21, 10:20, 11:2]. Rome is never named as the 4th kingdom.

However, if we follow one of the most basic hermeneutical principles of Bible interpretation and let Scripture interpret Scripture, we come to quite a different conclusion. If we let Daniel’s book tell the story and interpret itself, we can identify this 4th and final kingdom from the geography Daniel gives us in chapter 11.

Daniel goes to great lengths recording the exploits of the “king of the north”. Then, in verse 11:40, Daniel calls the Antichrist the “king of the north”. Why does he do this? The reason is, Daniel is establishing the geographic area of this king’s rule so when he calls the Antichrist the “king of the north”, it follows that the Antichrist will also rule this same area. Daniel is begging the question: Where is this north kingdom?

History tells us this north kingdom was the Seleucid Empire, one of the 4 kingdoms that came out of the broken Greek Empire after the death of Alexander the Great [Daniel 11:3-4, 7:6, 8:8]. This area encompasses modern-day Turkey/Syria/Lebanon/Iran/Iraq. A good study Bible will identify this area for you. Daniel is giving us the geographic location of this 4th and final kingdom and it’s in the Middle East.

Much of the Book of Daniel interprets itself. When we apply the basic hermeneutical rule of letting Scripture interpret Scripture, we find that Daniel identifies the geographic location of the Antichrist’s kingdom for us in chapter 11. It’s located in the Middle East, not Rome, Europe, America or anywhere in the West. Therefore, if the Antichrist isn’t ruling from Rome, Europe, America or any other Western nation in Daniel 11, neither can he be elsewhere since all of end-time prophecy describes this same end-time kingdom under the authority of the Antichrist. This includes King Neb’s legs (and feet) of iron on his statue in chapter 2 and also Daniel’s 4th beast kingdom in chapter 7 as well as all the other books prophesying about these same events.

        Blessings…

  53. Scott (aka Table97) says :

Sorry…I just don’t get how you are reading God’s word here. Ezekiel 37:28 (the last verse before these two chapters you are placing such a high emphasis upon) states that God will be with Israel and protecting Israel. These two chapters, with their great symbolism and use of “unknown” lands and leaders seem to me to simply be a way of illustrating that point. Why must everything in the Bible point to “the end?” I just don’t get the fascination with that. Oh well.

A big mistake made in this article is mistaking the modern nation state Israel with the true Israel, the 10 northern tribes that split away from Judah. Today’s nation of Israel is actually Judah, which contains the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and some of the Levites. The end times prophecies concerning Judah are contained in Zechariah and Zephaniah. Ezekiel is talking about the invasion of the lands where the 10 northern tribes are currently located, not the Holy Land (although they too will be invaded). Israel and Judah will not be rejoined until the millinium kingdom as stated in Ezekiel 37.

Go and preach the gospel, heal the sick, raise the dead, cast out demons in Jesus name. You have a destiny and debating the end times is a waste of your precious time and energy. To keep us slaves (like in Egypt). It is finished people! Jesus did it all for us on the cross. The devil wants us to keep looking to the future, and that robs Gods people from Jesus’ first coming. The second coming is when He comes into our hearts. This is why Jesus came to fulfill all of the Torah and the Prophets and then ascended back to the Father. He couldn’t live in our hearts if He was still here. If He did it all on the cross, why do we look for Him to do more. I repent for my wrong thinking. While I understand you are trying to be encouraging and a peacemaker, your belief that heaven is on earth and living inside of us if we are in Christ is borderline Gnostic and definitely incorrect. Yes, with Christ’s first Advent, the kingdom of God is “already but not yet.” The not yet is important. We have not been brought into glory yet. Heaven does not dwell inside of us: the Holy Spirit does. Heaven is a place, not a person.

It’s true Christians are to be light to the lost… however, Scripture does say in Revelation 19:10 that “the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” Those who are born of the Spirit of our Lord look forward to His Second Coming, we are promised a crown of righteousness for our ‘looking for’ His appearing. We are told that if ‘any man speak’ to do so as of the oracles of God, ie., speaking what has already been written by the prophets & apostles which includes prophecy. God told these future events to His prophets of old and told them to write it down so that when we see these things happen, we will know that He is God, and even went so far as to challenge other false religions to tell the future and get it right in effort to disprove Him as the One & Only True God. Prophecy is proof that God’s Word is True and that there is none like HIm. It’s a great witinessing tool.

    • Student of eschatology says :

The Gog/Magog invasion in Ezekiel occurred when the Scythians invaded, did it not? The Gog/Magog war of Revelation 20 has a number of marked differences, the most glaring is that Judgment Day occurs at the end of the Rev 20 event.

  66. Don Burke says :

Okay, but this brings up a question. According to Revelation:

And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison and will come out to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea.
    (Rev 20:7-8)

…the battle of Gog and Magog is after Satan has been chained for 1,000 yrs and is again released. So is Putin supposed to stick around for another 1,000 yrs in order to do what Jeff suggests here is possible?

    • Student of eschatology says :

You are correct Mr. Burke, however, only partly so. Evangelical Christianity has made a hash of the Thousand Years, desperately trying to make it into some sort of Golden Age which it isn’t. Or should I say WASN’T. The thousand years is actually an undetermined time period expressed as a thousand years. Read Isaiah 2 regarding the exaltation of the people of God. The Christian Church DID IN FACT become the mountain that was exalted over all the other mountains (mountains=world religions). The knowledge of the LORD actually HAS covered the earth as the waters cover the seas. The places where Christ has never been heard of are few and far between.

The Thousand Years has both a beginning and an end. It began at the Ascension, and I believe personally that it ended one fateful day in July 1945 at a place called Alamogordo, New Mexico. It was after the first nuclear detonation that mankind began to believe wholesale in the humanistic non-Biblical concepts which have spread to our societies today and have surrounded and attacked the Christian Church. Whether the detonation itself played an actual physical part in the release of Satan to again deceive the nations wholesale, that’s hard to say. God knows, I don’t. What I DO know and observe is that the nations are enacting laws which do not mirror the Law of God regarding conduct and lifestyle, and that they are attacking God’s faithful, physically and ideologically, which is what Revelation 20 clearly states would occur at the time of Satan’s release.

If we follow the whole chapter, we find that THIS Gog is Satan himself, leading the wicked of the nations (Magog) invisibly. The Rev 20 account is markedly different than the Ezekiel 38-39 account. The most notable of these differences is that at the defeat of Revelation’s Gog/Magog, Judgment Day occurs.

      • Ben says :

@Student – the thousand years have in no way passed by us, or the book of Revelation is a fabrication. Revelation 20:3-6 specifies specific characteristics of the millennium.

“3 and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while.

4 And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a[a] thousand years. 5 But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.”

We know satan has actively “deceived the nations” over the last 2000 years. The middle ages were some of the most corrupt and evil times in history. And there are countless despots and tyrants who have clearly been led by the evil one.

It speaks of those who had been slain for not taking the mark of the beast. This is still a yet future event to us today.

It is quite clear the 1000 years has not begun.

    • Evelyn Perkins says :

Hi Don. Good point, it could be that the survivng ‘1/6th part of thee’ that God draws down against Israel in Ezekiels battle of Gog & Magog, who retreat and recoup, are rallied by Satan in support of his final charge against Christ. God brings them against Israel for the first Gog/Magog battle, but it is Satan who leads them against Christ following His millennial reign. Again, Gog is a refrence to a leader, not a certain mans name, so the new leader of the Russian people that God allows to survive and go back to their land would also be considered Gog/Magog thereafter.

  67. Joel says :

Way off. Russia is now a Christian nation, while modern Israel is corrupt and apostate. The only hope of the Jews is Christ, not Moses; but modern Israel does not even hope in Moses. It is secular and full of devils, as is the United States. The government of Israel pays for abortions and honors homosexuality. There’s nothing Godly about it. It is totally apostate. The national covenant they enjoyed was done away due to their idolatry and because of their rejection of God’s Son: “Behold, your house is left unto you desolate”; and: “for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.” A new covenant has been established by the blood of Jesus, wherein Jews and all nations alike are grafted into Christ through faith. If it is fools errand for Jews to hope in the Old Covenant, it is a double fool’s errand for Christians to hope in the Old Covenant. Jews must repent of their sins and turn to Christ to be saved. Zionism is an effort to hold on to Moses. The book of Hebrews repeatedly makes it clear that Jews must embrace the new covenant and that the Old Covenant has passed away.

    • Student of eschatology says :

Joel, will you PLEASE stop confusing people with the truth.

For all of you fine folks who continue to think that God is concerned covenantally with apostate natural Israel, answer these two questions:

      1. What did Jesus mean when he said in Mt 21:

Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.

      2. What did Jesus mean when he said in Acts 1:7 :

And he said unto them, “It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.” In response to the question:

When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?

  68. Joel says :

Clarification of my post above: The secular Zionists that established modern Israel could not care less about Moses or Jesus. It is CHRISTIAN ZIONISTS that (unintentionally) steer Jews to Moses, hoping in a future return to temple worship and national greatness.

  69. AW says :

It has long been believed that our final war would be with Russia. Many modern Bible scholars have warned us to be vigilant against the possible threats.

In the not-to-distant past, we started to believe that maybe Russia was not the threat we thought they were, with the attacks of 911 our thoughts shifted to Jihad mentality nations, if you look deeper however, you will find that they are in cahoots with Russia and perhaps they are one and the same.

Though we cannot avoid Bible prophecy, nor do I want to avoid it, because it foretells the second coming, we can be watchful and ready.

It is my personal belief that my generation will still be alive when Christ returns. I am nearly 60 years old so that means that it could be any time now, but certainly within the next decade or two. If you are not prepared to meet God, it is now the time to prepare by getting to know your savior personally. The place to start is by picking up the Holy Bible and reading about Jesus. Pray for a personal knowledge and revelation, and then pray for Jesus to become your savior. Accept the gift he gave you, his life and bearing the burden of your sins on the cross. Once you accept that gift, you will be forever called a Christian, and my brother or sister in Christ.

I pray for the blessings of this world to be yours, but more importantly, I pray for the blessings of everlasting life to be yours and they will be when you become a born again believer of Jesus Christ.

Good article overall, however I might note the location of the land of Magog is not nearly as clear as you suggest. There is no consensus on its identity. Drawing a straight line north from Israel also passes through Syria, Turkey and some other nations. I’m not saying it’s not Russia, I’m just saying it’s not a slam dunk.

  72. Caleb Perkins says :

Just thought I would see if I could get a response from the Author, and some information.

Just some info I dug up that may conflict with some accusations this article makes. According to http://www.justgorussia.co.uk/…/school_tour_three… Moscow has always been the capital of the Russian state. Yes if you draw a straight line up from Israel you will see Russia, but you will also see Nicosia, Turkey, and Ukraine. Also if you draw a line straight up from every country spanning from Egypt to Japan you will find Russia. Also Germany is not a direct ally with Russia. Germany is in Nato which Russia is not a part of. http://www.nato.int/cps/en/natolive/nato_countries.htm Though Russia does have a seat with in Nato. Russia also does not see the Western nations as an enemy, or at least that is what is stated. If any thing Vladimir is working hard to maintain peace for Russia, but also making sure that Russia is protected. The only reason he pushed into Crimea was to make sure that a NATO base was not built on there borders. You can look up several articles that imply that Russia is no longer a direct enemy, but I find that laughable in the eyes of any government. http://www.foreignaffairs.com/…/is-russia-still-an-enemy. I also have to put this article that sais, “Calling Iran modern day Persia is like calling all of Britain ‘England.” Because there were Iranian kingdoms that were under the Persian kingdom, but that does not make them Persian. http://www.heritageinstitute.com/zoroastrianism/iranpersia/ Take this info with a grain of salt. It was literally a 30 minute search. I just thought I would see what I could find in that time to confirm what you were saying.

This is one of the first online exchanges discussing biblical subjects that I have ever seen that did not get haughty, mean-spirited and downright ugly. Thank you to all of you who have posted here and contributed to this thread. While I do completely agree with Jeff and his literal interpretation of the scripture, I also appreciate the spirit with which “John” has responded. It is refreshing and stands as an example of how we should all encourage one another. John, remember, Iron sharpens iron so don’t get stuck in what culture is telling you about the modern interpretations of the ancient scripture. I was a frog boiling in the slowly heated pot of replacement theology without even realizing it and my eyes were opened to the heresy of this belief. Believers in Isreal are very afraid that the church in America is forgetting about them because of this new “theology” and I, for one, do not want to be counted as leaving Isreal out of the end of God’s story. Blessings on you all and keep sharpening one another.

  76. Damon says :

Regardless of the stand one takes on this passage of scripture and it’s prophetical application, I think one thing has been greatly overlooked…Jesus stated in Matthew 24 and in Mark 13 that there would be a variety of signs that indicate the season of His return. Ezekiel 38-39 may very well fit into those indicators, but whether it does or not isn’t the point. The point is that the “signs of the season” are here and the focus should be not on what Putin, Obama or any nation does (yes, it’s important but priorities must be kept) but on having ourselves and those who will listen to the Gospel of Jesus Christ be ready for what will happen next. I believe the next event is what is called the rapture of the church by many. We have no idea when that will happen, but one thing is certain…it will happen. So, while the discussion is good and the information is wonderful, don’t lose sight of what really matters. This world is on a collision course with Jesus, and according to what I’ve read in the Bible, Jesus wins and I want to make sure myself and others are on the winning side. Thanks!

and that was taken largely from an article written in 1978, which was copied largely from an essay written in 1962. The Bible states that NO MAN knoweth the time.

Jeff – the book of Revelation clearly tells us that Gog shows up AFTER the thousand years when Satan is loosed on the Earth. “7 Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea.” – Rev. 20:7-8

  80. Patricia says :

There is a lot of interest in the battle of Gog and Magog at the present time. There are only two books in the Bible in which this battle is named. Ezekial and Revelation. Why is it that the reference in the Book of Revelation is hardly mentioned when this subject is discussed. Many people think the battle of Gog and Magog is imminent and yet Revelation indicates this is the very last battle to take place on the earth at the end of the Millennial Reign of Christ. It is at that time, the enemy participants will be completely wiped out. Ezekial 38:22, And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone. What if Ezekial 38 is the battle of Gog and Magog referenced in Revelation 20:7-9 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, 8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. 9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.

And what if Ezekial 39 is an actual reference to Armageddon which the Lord will fight with His armies (Revelation 19) just before the Millennial Reign? 39:2 And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts, and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel: It appears the Lord will spare 1/6 of the armies who fight against Him at Armageddon, but it will take 7 months to bury the dead and seven years to burn the weapons of war. Then at the end of the Millennial Reign the same group will return to fight the battle of Gog and Magog and be annihilated.

Very little is said about the war of the seals and trumpets found in Revelation 6, 8, & 9. Could this happen before Armageddon and Gog and Magog?

According to the bible Gog and Magog doesn’t happen til after the millennium. Also read the whole chapter of Ezikiel 38 and it is very clear that this happen when we are already with Jesus WAY after the rapture. I don’t think Putin will be alive that long. Silly zionist try to make prophecy out of everything.

It is no wonder that so many in America can be fooled by so few with such ease. Some people are inclined to believe rather than think.

Did you know Turkey is economically aligned with all nations listed in Ezekiel 38:2-6 regions? When Turkey leaves N.A.T.O. and joins the Russian military alliance all those nations economically aligned with Turkey can be flipped into the Gog/Magog military alliance.

Would Turkey ever leave N.A.T.O.? Turkey right now as this research reveals in the link is buying weapons from Russia and next year 2015 Russia will start building Turkey its first nuclear power plant.

Thank you for everyone who has contributed to this discussion. I appreciate that you’d take the time to read, think, respond, pray. It is true that some of all of this doesn’t actually matter – we can’t be as sure about some of these dichotomies as we can be about the overwhelming reality (and reward) of beholding the King when He again comes. Without wanting to be lazy (and I didn’t read all of the 160+ comments) I think it is important to major on the NT reality of ‘watchfulness’ for Jesus (eagerly) rather than on interpretative minutiae as a blueprint/treasure map for end-time events. Some of the details of what I’ve read here are spurious and I always look for strength of opinion, education in wisdom and a great heart of love being obvious through what is said, responded etc. Some have done that.

I’m not sure whether Putin represents Gog or whether Israel is literal based on geographical borders or rather a spiritual inclusion alone. I’d like to spend some time investing in reading around some of this as I watch in the months and years ahead. But what I do know is that it’s good to think and pray about these interpretations because it’s part of our watchfulness.

What I object to is the notion (far too common here in the UK) that we ‘just need to keep our eyes on Jesus’ as though, somehow, considering OT prophecy (unfulfilled) is not doing that. I suggest that it going to be those who love Jesus, who eagerly wait His return, who would most spend time dwelling on some of these realities and questions thereof as part of cultivating a lifestyle of evangelistic urgency and theological integrity.

I saw a news article recently where Putin vows to defend Christianity. Is this all just “strong delusion”?? I’m just not seeing Putin as Gog, sorry.
